Banana Republic hasn't done much for me lately. I typically skip visiting the store and website and inevitably end up at J.Crew. But, all of this may be changing...

You guys know how much I love the retro style that is done so well in AMC's Mad Men, right? So I was pretty excited when I heard about Banana's Mad Men-inspired line coming out this Fall (see all of the looks here). Even the men can get in on this action Don Draper-style. Love!

I am completely obsessed with the dress Lea Michele wore in last night's season finale of GLEE (I'm less obsessed with the episode itself. Total let down)! The style and color were so perfect that I immediately went on a mission to find it. I found several mentions of the dress and that scene in Central Park, but nothing about who designed it or how I could get my hands on one. I finally discovered that the dress is ... VINTAGE! (Gasp!) So this means it will never be mine? Say it isn't so! It's a very sad turn of events, but I still just adore it!

I'm back! Just had a week-long vacation and I'm feeling refreshed and focused and ready to tackle this blog again. Sorry for disappearing...

So, it's Spring! How did that happen? My wardrobe has been full of black for so long that I'm finally ready to add some actual color into my life. Here are some of the items I've already acquired to accomplish this mission. Just the beginning, I'm sure.

I knew I had to have this striped t-shirt as soon as I saw it in the May J.Crew catalog. It is now mine and I plan to wear it a lot!

I heart this oversized clutch from Zara so much. Mostly because it's big and bright and sassy (also comes in blue, green and yellow)! I will be carrying it as much as possible in the coming months for a fun splash of color!

I've also become slightly obsessed with this controversial polish (to the controversy: can I get a big WHO CARES?!). It's much brighter than my usual shades, but I sort of love it and am currently wearing it on my toes.

How cute does Bryce Dallas Howard look in kate spade's new ad campaign?! You know how I adore all things kate spade, but I am particularly obsessed with this look. The Big Eat 2011 {Part 3}

I'm kind of a creature of habit: when I find something I love at a restaurant, I pretty much order it over and over again. This is the case with the carnitas tacos at Tacolicious (I've talked about them here). It's never really occurred to me to try something else. So imagine my surprise when 7X7 left them off of the Big Eat List. Really? But alas, they did and horror of horrors, they included carnitas from other places throughout the city (Nopalita does have amazing carnitas, I have to admit). What they did include was the tuna tostada. So...

I went to Tacolicious with two of my girlfriends from high school. There is lots of great Mexican food in our hometown, so it was only fitting to end up there together. I ordered the tostadas, but I couldn't go to Tacolicious without having the tacos too. The tostada was quite good. The tuna was fresh and delicious and the chipotle sauce was a nice touch and the flavor really came through. All-in-all, a great warm-up to the main attraction. The carnitas were perfection, as always. Try them when/if you're in SF. Seriously.

Tommy's Mexican Restaurant margarita

I'm making some progress on 7X7's The Big Eat list. I ventured to the Richmond District the other night to try one of Tommy's Mexican Restaurant's famous margaritas. I wasn't sure what I was walking into since I had heard that Tommy, the owner and founder, passed away suddenly earlier in the week. What I saw were flowers arrangements, people paying their respects and regulars asking for updates on how the family was doing. It's clear that the neighborhood (and beyond) cares deeply for the Bermejo family.

They didn't have a table for us at first, so we wandered into the bar area for our first margarita. There are so many different kinds of tequila (according to their website, "the best selection of Tequila on earth"), we thought it was safest to go for the house margarita. This may have been the perfect margarita. Not too sweet and not too sour. Not too strong or weak. Perfect and definitely worth the trek and well worth the wait (the food wasn't bad either)!

Next up: The tuna tostada from a personal favorite, Tacolicious.

I am completely obsessed with pop culture and celebrities and have been forever. I used to say that I preferred magazines like US Weekly over People Magazine because the latter wrote about "real" people too much. So I thought I would put together a little celebrity round-up of goings on in the past week. Thanks to Charlie Sheen, The Oscars and Christina Aguilera, there have been a lot!

Personally, I have been so consumed with Charlie Sheen and all of his "winning" this week and last, that I have had little time for anything else. Have you been watching? Is it all too much? I can't get enough and, like any celebrity train wreck, I can't look away. From TMZ and Piers Morgan to 20/20 and The Today Show, I've seen it all! Now that he's on Twitter, the hits just keep on coming. Duh!

Christina Aguilera and her b.f. were pulled over the other night and he was arrested for alleged drunk driving. Apparently, the diva was so drunk that they held her until she was coherent enough to make a phone call. She couldn't make a phone call? And she said she didn't know where she lived because she doesn't drive. Really? Wow, honey, it sounds like you need help. Maybe Charlie Sheen has room in his new recovery program.

US Weekly is reporting this week that Anne Hathaway and James Franco hate each other after their Oscars hosting gig. Yes, the show was kind of a disaster, but I don't know what he has to be mad about! She carried the whole thing while he stood there looking half asleep. He should be thanking her!

I basically thought the Oscars telecast was a big snooze fest, but the women looked amazing! The hair and make-up was perfect and there were so many great dresses. Well done, ladies of Hollywood!

Sandra Bullock: She basically knocks it out of the park every time. Way to show that a-hole Jesse James!

Tartine Bakery's Morning Bun

I guess when I decided to take on 7X7 Magazine's 2011 Big Eat list, I didn't realize how long this could really take. While I have tried a few things on the list, I have a long way to go to make a real dent. Time to get busy!

Since the weather was so nice on Saturday, I decided to walk to the Mission and get my hands on one of those morning buns from Tartine Bakery. I knew this was a popular spot, I just didn't fully grasp how popular. The line was out the door and down the block but people were waiting patiently for what I could only assume would be a treat well worth said wait. And let me tell you right now, people...it was. The morning bun was flakey on the outside with some sort of orangey sugary goodness sprinkled on top. The inside? Well, that was chewy, moist and melt-in-your-mouth wonderfulness. When I was finished with it, I wanted another one. It was yumalicious and I now understand why it makes its way back onto the list each year.

Next up was going to be Tommy's Mexican Restaurant's margaritas, but plans have changed. I will keep you posted on my next stop.

It's Just a Little Crush

Thought I would join in the Listography fun again this week. The topic? Same sex crushes. The first person that comes to mind is Gwyneth Paltrow (I've already told you about my girl crush on Gwynie). I think she's great. She's a great actress with amazing style and a hot musician husband. Plus, I'm pretty sure we would be fast friends.

Next up, Idina Menzel. She is my vocal idol. I would LOVE to have a range like hers. I loved her as Maureen in RENT and she was phenomenal as Elphaba in Wicked. Then she pops up on GLEE as Rachel's long-lost mother? Brilliant! Plus, she's married to Taye Diggs and she has really good hair. (sigh)

Finally, Minka Kelly. She was on one of my favorite shows, Friday Night Lights, and I just think she's gorgeous. She also has a hot significant other: Derek Jeter. Lucky girl.

I thought I would join in on the Listography fun this week! So sports teams... My parents had season tickets to the San Francisco 49ers and I was lucky enough to go to many games growing up. The good games. Back when the team was really really good. It was a full-day affair complete with tailgating and hanging with the part of the family I didn't see that often. Good times.

My exposure to other teams and sports has been somewhat limited. Well, actually, that's not entirely true. Since I've lived in San Francisco for the last seven (almost eight) years, I have fully embraced the Giants and have attended many games. How lucky that they are now the WORLD CHAMPIONS!!! So that leaves all the rest.

OU - I've been to two OU football games. The first was a homecoming game against Colorado when my family and I were in Norman for my great-grandmother's birthday. The second was an OU vs. Texas game with Danielle and her hubby in Dallas. It was cold and rainy and pretty much miserable. But Go Sooners!

UOP Tigers - I think I went to one football game before they cut the program. Do you know how much it sucks to go to a school that doesn't have a football program? Or I guess I should say, do you know how much better it would have been to go to a school with a football program?

Los Angeles Kings - My roommate in LA and I decided to be hockey fans. We made it to one game, which was awesome, and never went back.

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Real Madrid - All I can say is the Rose Bowl, Sergio and Cristiano. What more could a girl ask for?

San Francisco's 7X7 Magazine published The Big Eat 2011 this week and I'm determined to conquer this list if it's the last thing I do! You see, each year the magazine chooses 100 things across the city that they think you must try before you die. The updated version, like in past years, makes me hungry as well as motivated to try new places and revisit some old favorites (that means you, Zuni, Delfina, Spruce & Nopalito). While I've experienced some of the items on this list, I have a long way to go to complete it but I'm willing to give it a try. I already have plans to have the margarita at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant with some old friends. The perfect kick-off to a yummy challenge.

But I'll still have some money left over, so clearly I need to find something else! Unless I buy hundreds of dollars worth of make-up (which I could easily do, btw), I thought I would find something else that I would get tons of use out of. So I saw these...

As I've said before, I get very nostalgic at Christmas time. Obviously traditions change over the years with in-laws and kids in the picture, but there are a few that I have come to really love.

Christmas morning before all of the kids arrive when we get the last of the gifts out and make final preparations for the day (I have six nieces and nephews so it's the last time we have quiet until about 8pm).
My Mom's breakfast casserole. I get it once a year and LOVE it!
The Christmas morning bloody mary. One of the only times it's totally acceptable to drink before noon.
Of course, my favorite moments each Christmas come while watching the kids open all of their presents.

As part of my unofficial ritual of getting into the holiday spirit, I listen to Christmas songs on loop from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day (my coworkers claim to love it, but I'm not so sure). I just have so many great memories of listening to my parents' records at Christmas time. From Bing Crosby's White Christmas to the Time-Life Treasury of Christmas (it's good, I swear), certain songs conjure up images of some of my most favorite Christmases. Many years ago, when I was living in Los Angeles around the holidays and feeling particularly nostalgic and homesick, I tracked down my babysitter from my childhood (I guess it was more like daycare than babysitting). I wanted to see how she and her family were, but I also wanted to see if she would give me her rocky road recipe. I have such fond memories of the holiday season with Judy and her family and the baked goods and candy she made each year (she also made ornaments for me that I still treasure to this day). Since my family moved away when I was 12, I sort of lost touch with Judy. It was nice to catch up with her that day and I have made her fabulous rocky road every Christmas since then. It isn't a difficult recipe and it isn't gourmet, but I love it and think of her every time I make it.

Here is the recipe:

1 12 oz package of chocolate chips (I use Ghiradelli and it's so much better than cheaper chocolate!)

1 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
2 T butter
2 C dry roasted peanuts, unsalted (or try salted for that sweet/savory combo)
1 10 ½ oz package of mini marshmallows

Melt chocolate chips, milk and butter in the microwave. Add marshmallows and peanuts and mix together. Line a 9x13 Pyrex with wax paper and spread mixture in pan. Refrigerate for a few hours or until solid. Cut into squares and enjoy!

Maybe that's the romantic in me (and his accent doesn't hurt). Now, he's playing a sheriff from Georgia battling zombies each week on AMC's "The Walking Dead" with a different kind of accent (have you ever noticed that Brits master the southern drawl in no time? Interesting). Not as romantic, but still quite lovely.

I love Christmas. Well, I love the way I used to feel at Christmas when it was a time full of magic and wonder. Now I think I'm nostalgic for that feeling and I desperately try to get at least a fraction of that back each year. In order to do this, I immerse myself in all things Christmas as much as possible. From listening to Christmas music non-stop to baking Christmas cookies to decorating my house (how many times can I say Christmas in this post?)! Another way I try to get into the spirit is by watching my favorite Christmas movies, without which, it would NOT be Christmas to me. Do you have any faves?

Make it Nice Around the Tree

My family has a Christmas tree lot and for the past eight years, I have spent my December weekends there helping out. One would think that being around all of that holiday "cheer" would make getting into the Christmas spirit no problem. That is not the case at all. It actually makes it much more difficult especially when you are dealing with people who are searching for the "perfect tree." Newsflash! There is no such thing so just pick one! The gaps and holes that you see on the lot will be covered with lights and ornaments once you decorate it, so they really don't matter. And besides, it's not like you're making a lifelong commitment to the tree. It will be in your home for a few weeks and kicked to the curb! Does the tree have some brown spots on it? Well, it's been kinda warm and THE TREE HAS BEEN DEAD FOR WEEKS. Once you cut down a tree, it's dead. Simple as that. What's that? You won't be putting it in a water stand? Great, but don't expect to have any needles left come Christmas morning, let alone after Christmas. But you know what the biggest shocker is? Even the ugliest tree on the lot will sell if you drop the price. And when I say ugly, I mean REALLY ugly. But to each his own. Lucky for me, my time at the tree lot this season has come to a close. So now I can actually start my Christmas shopping and get into the spirit.

GLEE: Britney/Brittany

First off, I would like to say that I am a huge supporter of Britney Spears and always have been. I stayed with her during the agro-umbrella-wielding-head-shaving days and I was rooting for her to get better. I even went to her show on Easter Sunday during the Circus tour for crying out loud. I think she's a very talented entertainer (I said entertainer, not singer) and I'm glad she's made such a great comeback.

Now, on to the show. How exciting is it that one of my favorite characters got her very own episode? Brittany S. Pierce (hilarious) brings the one-liners like nobody else and tonight was no different! The fact that the majority of the performances were inspired by a combination of thoughts of Britney Spears and anesthesia is pretty much, well, perfect. The first half of the episode did feel like a series of music videos, but I'm not complaining. I loved every minute of it.

Favorite Brittany lines of the night:

"I’m more talented than all of you. I see that clearly now. It’s Brittany…b*tch.”

"I don't brush my teeth. I rinse my mouth out with soda after I eat. I was pretty sure that Dr. Pepper was a dentist."

OK, one more:

"This room looks like the one on that spaceship where I got probed."

Apart from the fabulousness of all things Britney/Brittany, there were some other highlights:

We were introduced to Emma's dentist boyfriend (played by John Stamos, who is brilliant!)
Kids Incorporated AND Blossom references.
The cutaways to Jacob Ben Israel (and friend) during the assembly performance.
The Paramore song performed by Rachel at the end. Love that song.

If there was any doubt in your minds that Heather Morris is one of the best dancers on the show, then there isn't any longer. She rocked those routines and reminded me of a time when Britney Spears gave it her all.

For the first time, I am really loving the animal print trend that's back this fall. I've never been a huge fan, but I can picture pairing the black, cream and camel combos with loads of gold jewelry along with rich reds, greens and other primary colors as accents.
